BUREAU OF OPERATIONAL LANDSCAPES

ABOUT THE GUIDED TOUR

Logistics choreographs movement—of goods, people, and information—while keeping its own workings out of sight. The Bureau's tour invites you to move differently, to trace the systems shaping Maasvlakte and uncover the overlooked, the incidental, and the unscripted.

We do not dispute the official story—we complicate it. The result is a tour within a tour, where different versions of the same place coexist, overlap, and contradict.

Your expedition unfolds in two parts:

1: THE PERIPHERY

Explore Maasvlakte through four sites and eight signs — the Bureau’s overlooks, rendering the inaccessible unexpectedly engaging. The Bureau’s interpretations reveal what official accounts leave out. Curious about the life of a sailor or the ghost stories of automation? Even the most controlled landscape has something to share.

2: THE CENTRE

Board the FutureLand ferry and enter the heart of Maasvlakte. For an hour, a retired sea captain regales you with Rotterdam’s logistical triumphs. But this will not be the only tour taking place. The Bureau runs a parallel guide—a mobile phone-driven layer of insights, contradictions, and untold histories. As the official tour unfolds, an alternative version emerges, reframing the landscape in real time.

Stay tuned for updates on future expeditions.
